In fact, a plausible explanation for the couplets was presented in the young-earth creationist literature one year prior to Davidson and Wolgemuth’s article. Davidson and Wolgemuth, however, present a new “spin” on the argument: they claim that the correlation between these “varve” counts and radiocarbon dates (as well as tree-ring counts), proves that the Lake Suigetsu varves are true annual events, thus presenting an unanswerable argument for an old earth.
Before the Varves Working Group was formed in 2009, it had been around 10 years since the last specific meeting of the "varve community" at the Lammi Biological station in Finland in 1999.
Since then, there have been many new publications on varved sediments, some of them describing methodological developments and others forming the basis for the interpretation of climate and environmental change in post-glacial times.
In this article we shall examine what a varve is, how they can be used for absolute dating, and when they cannot.
The reader may find it useful to go back and re-read the article on glaciers before continuing with this article.
However, it is difficult to use this principle as it is used in dendrochronology, to link together varve sequences in the present and in the past, and to associate varves in a lake currently being fed by glacial meltwater with a different lake in a different location where the glacier has melted entirely and the source of sediment has been removed.
Rather, the technique is more usually used on core samples taken from different locations in the same lake, in order to reduce error: if a minor disturbance has taken place in one location within the lake, removing one or more varves, then it is possible to use cross-dating with a sample taken from a different point in the lake to determine that this has taken place and to correct the chronology.Furthermore, they seem to misunderstand the recent results of the RATE research project that showed strong evidence of ubiquitous in situ radiocarbon within fossil specimens that should be radiocarbon “dead” by uniformitarian reckoning. Such results pose a serious challenge to uniformitarian assumptions underlying conventional radiocarbon age-dating methods. They made the same claims with the same example in a subsequent, virtually identical, presentation in a widely circulated Christian journal (Davidson and Wolgemuth 2012). Other old-earth advocates (Morton 2003) also believe this to be a strong argument. Their article claims that the very large number of Lake Suigetsu varve counts is strong evidence for an old earth.Tags: Adult Dating, affair dating, sex dating
